It does, technically. Seattle Public Utilities books an appointment-only special-items pickup at $30 per item, collected curbside on your next scheduled garbage day (seattle.gov/specialitems). The word doing all the work in that sentence is curbside — and on a Magnolia bluff lot, "the curb" is not where your things are.
Here, the curb can be a hundred feet of private driveway and a flight of stairs away from the garage, and further still from a daylight basement built into the slope. A crawlspace, a basement storage room, a deck two levels down from the street — none of those are curbside items in any meaningful sense. To use the $30 program you'd have to move every single piece yourself, up the stairs, along the drive, and out to the street, and then pay $30 apiece for the privilege. For a couch that's a bad afternoon; for thirty years of basement it isn't a plan at all.
Self-haul has the same shape. The nearest option is SPU's North Recycling & Disposal Station in Wallingford on N 34th St, published at roughly a $35 minimum per trip up to 420 pounds and about $165 a ton — reasonable gate rates, but they assume you already got everything into a truck. A basement rarely fits in one load, which means several round trips, a tarp and straps each time, and the same carry up the stairs at the start of every one.
The carry is the actual job in Magnolia, so we price the carry in. Long driveway, switchback stairs, basement steps, a slope between the house and the street — none of it is a surcharge. You point at the room; we empty it.
Magnolia loads are worth sorting. The good furniture from a longtime family home goes to donation first — Evergreen Goodwill, the Salvation Army (1-800-SA-TRUCK) and Habitat for Humanity ReStore all take usable pieces, and on an estate or downsizing job we'll get you a donation receipt, which is often worth more to the family than the item was.
The rest is separated, not shovelled. Metal — mowers, grill frames, shelving, old patio sets, garage scrap — goes to metal recycling. TVs, monitors, computers and laptops are banned from Washington garbage and go free through the state's manufacturer-funded E-Cycle program (ecyclewa.org / 1-800-RECYCLE). Clean wood, cardboard and yard waste are source-separated too, both because Seattle's ban on recyclables and compostables in the garbage requires it and because sorted material tips far cheaper than mixed garbage. Diverting isn't a slogan here — it's how the flat price absorbs Seattle's disposal costs without a surprise at the end. One note: propane tanks can't ride in a mixed load, so flag one if it's still attached to the grill.
Magnolia is three neighborhoods in one for a hauling crew. The bluff holds view homes with Puget Sound and Olympic outlooks, reached by private drives that switch back down the slope, often with the parking pad above the house and stairs down to the door. The mid-century single-family core is more conventional but comes with full basements and detached garages. And Interbay, on the flats below, is a different job again — easy truck access, but tight streets and a mix of newer stock.
What all three share is that the distance between your things and our truck is the real variable, and it's the one most quotes quietly load a fee onto. We plan the route before the crew arrives: where the truck can legally park, whether a shuttle run down the drive is needed, whether the basement stair takes a sofa in one piece or needs it split, and how to protect the landing and the floors on the way up. It's booked as one flat number and it stays that number. Long carries and steep driveways aren't an exception in Magnolia — they're the default, so we don't price them as one.
